Department of Energy Launches Magellan Scientific Compute Cloud

The Challenge DOE scientists  required far greater computing power (and accessibility to that power) than their legacy compute solutions could provide in order to run complex simulations.

The Solution Argonne National Laboratory and the National Energy Research Scientific Computing created the Magellan cloud, running three discrete software stacks and giving its scientists access to an on-demand resource for high compute-load projects.

Projected Results

  • Complete flexibility and scalability – can tailor needs on a project-by-project basis
  • 100 teraflops of total computational power
  • Will help Energy determine which scientific applications are best suited to the cloud
  • Frees limited supercomputing resources for those projects that demand it, providing a tailored solution for mid-range computing needs
  • Little to no administration costs
